How to Map Your Fields Without Cell Service (GPS Doesn’t Need Bars)

You can keep working when cell coverage ends, provided the maps and records you need are already on your device. In Ranch Mapper, that means download the area, check readiness, then reopen it offline before you leave. Simply viewing a field online does not verify that every map file is saved.

Location and map coverage are different

A GPS-equipped phone can determine its location without a cellular data connection. A usable fix still depends on the device, location permission and conditions such as the view of the sky. The map underneath your position needs its own saved data. A blank map and an unavailable location are different problems; check both before starting a walk. Apple explains how Location Services combines GPS and other signals.

Prepare Ranch Mapper before leaving service

1. Use the device and app you will take into the field. Connect to the internet and open your work area in the same browser or Home Screen app you plan to use. Adding an icon to your Home Screen does not download the maps.
2. Choose what to save. From the map, open Settings → All tools & preferences → More, then find Offline data. Select the coverage, layers and terrain depth you need, and give the saved area a useful name. Include aerial imagery if you will trace visible field edges; terrain alone does not include it. County coverage also needs a connection to look up its area.
3. Select Download offline and wait for completion. Review the saved-area status. A partial or interrupted download needs attention before you rely on it. If a storage warning appears, choose a smaller area or free space. Raising the app’s storage limit cannot override a device quota. Saving one area or detail level does not save every surrounding area or zoom level.
4. Run Check offline readiness. Keep the same coverage, layers and depth selected. The check verifies the app, map engine and selected map files; read its storage and missing-file messages.
5. Try the actual offline journey. Turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data, close and reopen the app, then open your saved area and records. Check the map layers and detail you will use. If you plan to walk a boundary, test location permission and the accuracy indicator too. Keep the app open during GPS capture.
6. Keep recovery copies outside the browser. Use Settings → Backup & restore → Back up private workspace for supported private records and assets. Use Export map pack in Offline data for a .ffmap file containing the selected downloaded coverage. Keep original drone scan files separately. A records backup and a map pack contain different things.

Browser or device cleanup can remove local storage, even after a successful check. A saved area is protected from normal map-cache cleanup in the app; it is not a guarantee against clearing browser data or device storage pressure. Recheck after changing devices, browsers, saved coverage or storage settings.

What you can do offline

• Draw, adjust and measure fields over the terrain and imagery you downloaded. Acreage is an estimate based on the boundary and source data, not a survey.
• Use device records for the field work you record, and place map markers within available coverage. Check for a successful local save before closing an entry.
• Use location while the app is open if your device provides a usable fix. Review the reported accuracy; a phone position does not establish a property line.

What still needs a connection

New map downloads, place-name search, fresh weather and cloud sync need internet access. Any previously loaded forecast is dated information, not a fresh offline forecast.

After reconnecting, sign in and check the app's sync status for supported records. Ranch names, field boundaries and basic details, markers and yield records have cloud sync support. Fertilizer entries show their own sync status. A connection alone does not prove every entry is uploaded, and device-only details still need a backup.

Other ways to carry a map

A printed map remains useful as a fallback. For driving to the property, Google Maps supports downloaded areas; the entire route must fit inside the saved area, and offline driving does not include live traffic. For an existing georeferenced PDF or GeoTIFF, Avenza documents supported imports and current plan requirements. Check the requirements for the map you intend to use before depending on it.

A practical departure check

Downloaded area. Readiness checked. Reopened offline. Recovery copies saved. That is a useful preparation routine for the truck. If a map, record or location fix is missing during the rehearsal, resolve it while you still have a connection.
